Through the Silk Road

In 2024, the MadWay Rally crossed China — from the high ground near Khan Tengri, through the Tian Shan mountains, into the ancient Silk Road city of Kashgar.

From there, the convoy pushed on toward Aksu, skirting the edge of the Taklamakan Desert, before the route closed in Aral.

Fording the river

Somewhere along the way, the road gave out entirely. Cars crossed a wide, braided river by driving straight through it, splashing across shallow channels while the rest of the convoy waited on the gravel banks.

Nearby, herds of horses ran loose across green hillsides dotted with yurts.

Into the canyon

Victory Canyon cut deep into the Tian Shan — narrow, red-walled, carved by centuries of water and wind.

Cars moved through corridors of striated rock, dwarfed by cliffs rising on either side.

The nights didn't slow down either

Crossing the river wasn't a daytime-only task.

Headlights cut through the dark as cars pushed through the current one after another, engines straining against the water while the silhouettes of the cliffs faded into the night sky.
